Summer Cycling

Summer cycling  requires that you properly hydrate and wear light clothing to avoid overheating.

  • Carrying an extra bidon in a Jersey pocket can become the norm during hot rides.
  • A thermal bottle is also a great asset during the summer.
  • Cycling in the heat requires more hydration before during and after workouts. You must pay attention to how you feel and be ready to decrease the intensity accordingly.
  • The body works harder in the heat especially before acclimatization occurs. Gradually increase duration and intensity to allow the body to get accustomed to working in hot weather.
  • Plan your workouts in the early mornings or late evenings to avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • Plan stops accordingly to rehydrate or to take necessary breaks to ensure that you do not overheat.
  • Make sure that you are sweating, because the cessation of sweating is a sign of Heat Stroke or close to it. Do not take any chances if you do not feel well.
  • Stop the workout and find  a ride home if you feel faint or dizzy.
  • Heatstroke can creep up on anyone. Do not allow your ego to force you to continue a workout if you are feeling bad.
