Fully Perfectly Slamming road bike stem 2022
Slamming road bike Stem
Slamming road bike stem should be done with caution. One cannot blindly mimic professional riders when making this decision.
You must first determine the proper head tube length for you during a bike fit, before attempting to slam your stem. If your head tube is too low you will need to use spacers to be comfortable.
Before cutting the steerer tube:
- Verify the saddle to bar drop by putting miles in that position for a period of time
- make sure you are comfortable with the position because, once cut you will have to buy a new fork to go higher
- make sure the cut line is 3mm below where the spacer or stem will be to allow the cap to provide the correct compression to keep the headset from coming loose.
- use the proper tools to ensure a straight cut
- Use a file to smooth out the newly cut surface on the steerer tube
To keep the headset from coming loose the length of the steerer is critical. If you do not allow the cap of the headset to bottom out, before contacting the steerer the headset cannot be tightened properly.
Only tighten the headset cap to remove the play of the bearings. They are not to be overtightened. Once the play is removed, you are done.
Use the front brake to hold the wheel and check for play by rocking the bike forward and backward.
